June 2, working in the garden today, saw a flash of orange fly by the wegiela, chased it down to make sure of the ID! YES, it IS A MONARCH! Not a large one, but a medium size, we WILL take it!!! It's been a long Winter, and it is SO NICE to have them back, along with the Ruby Throat Hummingbirds, Summer is almost HERE!
I am sure it was not a viceroy. I made that mistake last year and learned the difference of the "black vein" lines differentiating the two. This monarch was a female, btw. I did not, however, get a chance to get a pic of it, since I had to leave shortly after I "ID'ed" it & saw that it was indeed, a "smallish" Monarch...not smaller than normal, just slightly smaller than the LARGER ones I raised last summer..
