Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/10/2013

Number: 1

In a new patch of young milkweed, not observed in previous years, I found 6 newborn caterpillars, all the same size (probably 3 days old). 5 were each inside the tight new buds at the very tip of the 24 inch milkweed, one per plant (which probably protected them from predators). 1 was on a leaf.
Meanwhile, I have been checking many patches of local Frederick County VA milkweed since the end of April and this is the first sighting of anything related to monarchs. Usually, by this time of year, I have had chrysalises and emerged monarchs to show my students. This is my 4th year raising monarchs.
