Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/22/2013

Number: 1

This is my first monarch sighting of the season, even though I have actively been looking for eggs and larvae for 2 months. In 20+ years of monitoring monarch populations, this is the latest first monarch by about a month.

The butterfly was a relatively fresh female who appeared to be searching for a place to lay eggs. She flitted around for a few minutes, then moved on without laying any eggs, even though there were milkweed plants in the area.
