Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/28/2013

Number: 1

While lunching at El Monumento, took a look off the deck toward the beautifully landscaped view of the San Gabriel River, what do I see below, happily nectaring away on the blue mist plants, but 10-15 adult Monarchs! Made a happy, family gathering even MORE pleasurable for me!!! Here's to happy Monarchs who actually LIKE the hot Texas summers!

Only had iPhone camera & wouldn't have shown up. I won't say I'm 100% positive they were M, not Q. But I've raised BUNCHES of M over the years and a few Q and am pretty sure of the difference. These were big guys, bigger than Q and am 99.9999% sure. Also, I have seen a few others up closer around central Texas this June, and am absolutely sure they were Monarchs. Thought THAT was pretty special since the migration had made it far north by then. If it was not for the 30-45 min drive each way and a hike down into the river bed on a bad knee, I'd go back for another, closer gander, and a with a slightly better camera. Who knows, maybe I can work in in on a very round-about route for a trip out of town tomorrow or Wed, have to think on that...
If I get it done, I'll be sure to let you know.
