Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

At 9 a.m. we walked to several milkweed habitats at the Grand Canyon where we've seen monarchs in the past. The milkweed was abundant, lush and in bloom and the main nectar source throughout the South Rim. We didn't see any monarch larvae (although we did find one large queen larva). No monarch adults. Gave up and started to walk back and thought we'd check one more spot. Good thing we did - A large, vibrant male monarch floated by, so we stayed a while. We spotted him again later that afternoon in the same location. Monday morning we couldn't find him anywhere so we backtracked the monarch "hotspots" and sure enough we found this one male monarch nectaring on Horsetail Milkweed, Asclepias subverticillata. I believe we were seeing the same one each time, though I can't be absolutely certain. Never saw more than one.
