Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/20/2013

Number: 1

An adult monarch was casually drifting across our backyard this morning -- the first one we have seen this year. It may have been attracted by our butterfly bushes, although it did not stop to gather nectar and flew out of the yard very soon.

I read recently in a news article that the Monarch population is dwindling due to extensive agricultural development in the corn belt. Since I live in central Illinois and have gone to great lengths to encourage butterflies and hummingbirds to visit my backyard, I jumped at the chance to report my sighting of Monarchs.
