Found one first instar cat this afternoon in our field (!), perhaps cohort to the 3 eggs collected two days ago. After spending the afternoon searching on ~ 100 common milkweed plants along the roads in our rural area and finding no sign of Monarch eggs, larvae, or adults, I checked the common milkweed plants on our property. Saw the tell-tale "smile" pattern on a leaf, and found the tiny cat at the base of the leaf along the stem. Feel very lucky to have found it; brought it in to rear in safety.
No other eggs or larvae found in our habitat, but did see an adult Monarch flying around the garden. Very fast, erratic flight, landing quickly on different plants, but not lingering on any one. Too fast and far away to tell whether male or female; just happy to see one!
