On IOWA-INSECTS@list.uiowa.edu, Chris Edwards, a highly experienced lepidopterist from Solon, Iowa wrote: "On Saturday 7/20 Mark Brown, Tom Jantscher, Mark Madsen, and Marcia Shaffer joined me on the annual Iowa City Butterfly Count. The weather was sunny with temperatures ranging from 78-88F and variable light winds. In 10.0 hours we found 33 species and 726 individuals, exceeding my expectations. The count's 15-year average is 34 species and 994 individuals. About one-third of the total butterflies were from one alfalfa field where sulphurs were plentiful."
Chris and the others reported seeing 16 monarchs, a below average number
