Visited Wenima Wildlife Area outside of Springerville. Approximately 20 to 25 monarchs are flying the fields and nectaring on Horsetail Milkweed, Asclepias subverticillata. At least 5 females were laying eggs in different meadows. Some of the females were very faded and worn, others in good condition. Horsetail Milkweed flowers are the primary nectar source. Abundant thickets of sunflowers are just beginning to bloom.
