Sightings report image

Date: 08/02/2013

Number: 1

While driving north on Hwy 180 in New Mexico we noted thick pockets of Horsetail Milkweed, Asclepias subverticillata roadside for long stretches. As we drew closer to the Arizona border (destination of Springerville) just outside of Luna, I noticed a flutter of orange wings, slammed on the brakes and pulled over. Found a female in excellent condition nestled in the milkweed laying eggs and occasionally nectaring. She'd take a rest on nearby short scrub low to the ground from time to time and in this photo.
