Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/02/2013

Number: 1

Visiting family in Terre Haute and found 3 first instar cats (!!!) on one large common milkweed plant my Dad brought to me - a wonderful surprise after not finding any evidence of Monarch activity at home (Hancock County) in about 3 weeks. Checked the field the milkweed came from; searched approx. 30 plants and found 2 older 2nd instar (?) cats, on separate plants. All taken in for rearing. I am amazed that my Dad chose the one plant with multiple caterpillars - what good fortune.

I drove miles of rural roads in the south Terre Haute area; not many common milkweed plants in the area; checked all I could access, and found no sign of Monarch activity. The absence of milkweed in the miles and acres of land I observed is particularly sobering knowing the lack of habitat and other challenges the Monarchs face. Very lucky to have found the 5 larvae.
