Monarch caterpillar preparing to become chrysalis. It was already attached (to stem of silene regia plant about 6 feet from nearest asclepias) when I spotted it. No change over past 3 hrs. This is the first sign of a monarch I've seen this summer - in past years I've seen butterflies laying eggs on milkweeds and caterpillars feeding, but none this year -- tho obviously someone layed the egg for this one.
