Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/19/2013

Number: 1

While gathering swamp milkweed seed pods on the Talbot River Road, I discovered 2 Monarch larvae on swamp milkweed plants. When feeding on this milkweed species, the caterpillars seem to prefer to eat the pods, more than the leaves. This was the only sighting of Monarch larvae or adults that I had in the Carden area today. There was no evidence of insect damage on common milkweeds that I inspected on several roadsides in the area.
