Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/25/2013

Number: 4

We have two feeders and enjoy watching the birds. We summer here in rural Twisp from early June till mid September. When we first arrived a hummer flew up to the window where my husband was at the table. I wasn't going to put out food because we were going to leave for a few days as soon as we got settled. The next morning I was glancing out the window and a hummer flew up to where my feeders hung last summer - first hovered where one feeder hung last summer then where the second one hung then right up to my window and glared at me. So I put up the feeders.

Now most of the birds have left except for 3 or 4. Two of them are smaller than the others we have had - like they maybe hatched later. When I got on this site I read that the adult males leave first then the adult females and lastly the juveniles. Last year they were all gone by Aug 15. We were worried that they got left behind and wouldn't make it through the winter.

We leave our cabin door open (no screen) in the early evening to cool it off. We have had a hummer fly in 4 different times. Once there were two and they flew in after dark. They settled down someplace and after we were up about 20 min in the morning they started flying again. I opened up the loft door and screen and they flew out. They are sure curious little birds.
