Today, I observed a male Queen butterfly nectaring on the Gregg's blue mist flower in my garden. This is the same plant that has attracted a male Monarch the past few days. As I watched the male Queen, I noticed a male Monarch attempting to nectar on the same plant. Every time the male Monarch tried to land on the flowers, the male Queen appeared to "hit" him to chase him away. The male Queen obviously had taken over this plant as his turf, and the male Monarch was not successful in being able to nectar at all. My husband and I observed this interesting turf war for about 15 minutes before we had to leave to run errands. The next day, we didn't see any signs of either butterfly.
