Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/23/2013

Number: 3

Last evening (August 23) I saw a few just at dusk flying between the flowers and a nearby tree. I would describe that as roosting behavior. My students have been monitoring monarchs for the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project all summer. The number of monarch larvae and eggs have been very discouraging. The blazing star in our school nature area is in full bloom. It always manages to draw in monarchs as they are migrating in late August. We spotted 8 different adults on Friday, August 23.

Editor's Note: The number of monarchs observed at this site is too small to be considered a roost. We are defining a roost as a group of monarchs where at least 12 butterflies are clustering for the night. (The number 12 is arbitrary but we use it consistently each year for data collection.)
