Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/26/2013

Number: 8

Here's a rundown on Monarch activity here during the last few days:

Wed, Aug 21- 5 monarchs, two at liatris in garden, 3 back hills

Thurs, Aug 22- 3 monarchs in late blooming milkweed in neighbor's old pasture

Fri, Aug 23- no monarchs spotted, no caterpillars spotted

Sat, Aug 24- New female in back corner sanctuary; 3 others in back pasture; 1 traveling north by driveway

Sun, Aug 25- 7 monarchs total: 4 on back hills, 2 at swede lake, 1 in garden

Mon, Aug 26 (a.m.)- 8 or more monarchs feeding in neighbor's old pasture, mostly on milkweed, but goldenrod coming on fast.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: except for last Thursday (when some monarchs may have used a northeast wind to begin their migration), wind has been from the south and temps very warm ( 70s-90s); Monarchs are definitely in a holding pattern now, feeding until a north wind sends them south.
First cold night could bring some roosts.

DISAPPOINTMENT: still have not seen caterpillars.....my conclusion is that we will not have a good late hatch here.
