We had several inches of rain last night, and when I was walking past the whorled milkweed plants (Asclepias verticillata) in my backyard today I noticed they were all laying flat on the ground. Much to my surprise, I saw six fat 5th instar caterpillars crawling around the plants and eating. The plants were so bushy and full of tiny leaves I totally missed them before. Must have been hard for the predators to find them too, thank goodness :). Also found two smaller instar caterpillars on a nearby Sullivant's milkweed.
