We saw one monarch butterfly in our back yard this morning flying around low to the ground for a few minutes and then going off into the brush area where we lost sight of it. What surprised us besides seeing the butterfly at all since my season was the poorest I've witnessed, was that this Monarch was much smaller than the ones I had previously seen. I doubt very much if it came from my milkweed patch in my front yard as there has not been any activity there for a month and before that I had only 3 caterpillars, none reaching maturity. I would like to know if anyone else has spotted this smaller size and why it can happen. It was Monarch markings and not a Viceroy.
