Walking to the garden, I saw a bit of orange atop a tropical milkweed flower. I thought, is this a Viceroy? So, I moved in ever so closely. Several times its wings opened, I saw no spots to indicate it was a male. I still wanted to be sure it was indeed a Monarch- we saw only 5 Monarchs in our garden during the spring migration - then as I held my breath, she flew away and I could tell by her flight pattern that she was a glorious Monarch!
As I left the Milkweed bed, I noticed that I had picked up a skirt full of aphids! Plenty of food for future babes. Our nursery is ready!
