Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/04/2013

Number: 50

Found another roost about 1 mile northeast of last night's sight.
This one was in the yard of Carl Roehlke. My thanks to him for letting me walk around and shoot photos. (And thanks to Jerry and Jim Emmert for giving me permission to walk their wonderful red clover fields. If only monarchs could always find such nectaring sites on their migrations........)
This roost was similar to last night's, probably 20-30 monarchs by sunset. One photo shows seventeen at an earlier stage. With the other scattered singles and smaller groups around the pines and trees of Carl's yard, I estimate 50-75 monarchs total.
In addition, I checked last night's site, but found no monarchs around last night's roosting tree. I suspect there were some monarchs roosting in the area, though....hard to believe there wouldn't have been another dozen or two along the south field edge.
I also saw quite a few flying monarchs on a high ridge on the east end of last night's field; they were looking to roost around the houses there.
Farther northeast, I also saw monarchs earlier that probably roosted along a westerly windbreak.......smaller numbers there, I think, maybe 10-20.
Not great numbers for nearly a square mile of red clover, but this year we'll take what we can get.
