Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/03/2013

Number: 1

I just saw the first hummingbird (in months) at my backyard feeder several times. It was an adult male Ruby-throated hummingbird in all his colorful glory. He fed from the feeder and also from the Firespike and Firebush blooms in the same area. He flew over to a 10 ft. tree in the yard next door. And then flew off.

No telling if he will be back, but this probably means the Winter birds are heading south and are now starting to come through my area. Or just maybe ... to even stay the Winter. I could not tell by looking at this handsome fella if he had a lot of fat on him. This signals southward movement to me. So the birds are now beginning to reach the east coast of Florida as they head to their wintering grounds. I only saw him that one afternoon. He has not been back since. I will be watching for more to come through.
