Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/08/2013

Number: 18

On a beautiful sunny, 80 degree day with a moderate north wind I spotted 18 monarchs fluttering by in a three hour period. They were flying from east to west and mostly solo. This is the first sign of the migration I have witnessed this season. The monarchs were flying with dragonflies and damselflies. I counted in upwards of over 1000 dragonflies, so the monarchs should hopefully be arriving shortly. More than half of the pinetrees in the area where the monarchs traditionally roost overnight were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, so although food is abundant, not sure what will happen at nightfall.
