My kids and I have "helped" to raise monarchs for the past five years. Last year, we released fifteen monarchs all in one day in early June. This year, we found only one egg on all of our milkweed (in mid-July; two days later, it was gone), but we did not see one adult monarch butterfly the entire summer. By this time of year, we usually see monarchs on their journey south when we drive down rural highways. Again, we have seen none. Hoping for a better year for the monarchs in 2014!
