6:30 AM 75 degrees, 84 percent humidity. Three Monarchs roosting in 150 year old Post Oak close to edge of garden. Each Monarch was roosting on a separate clump of dead leaves in east/west alignment with heat pointing west. The butterflies were all visible as I stood looking south at them. I checked another tree for roosting Monarchs finding none. 6:58 AM, returning to the first tree the three I had observed were gone. All quiet until 7:07 when 8 Monarchs were seen flying in the garden.
Editor's Note: We moved this report from the "roost" category where it was originally reported because the number of monarchs observed is below our minimum number. We are defining a roost as a group of monarchs where at least 12 butterflies are clustering for the night.
The number 12 is arbitrary but it is what we use consistently.
