6:30 AM 83 degrees, 74 percent humidity. One Monarch roosting on lowest clump of leaves on 150 year old Post Oak near the western edge of the garden(lower than the previous day). One Monarch roosting on Common Milkweed at northwestern edge of garden. All quiet until 6:45 AM when 8 Monarchs erupted from garden, flying for a while before setting down and feeding. 7:15 PM observed 3 Monarchs settling into Post Oak near edge of garden to roost.
Editor's Note: We moved this report from the "roost" category where it was originally reported because the number of monarchs observed is below our minimum number. We are defining a roost as a group of monarchs where at least 12 butterflies are clustering for the night.
The number 12 is arbitrary but it is what we use consistently.
