After a long spring and summer with no sightings, I saw my first monarch butterfly in my garden August 31st. Monarchs have been laying eggs non stop since then and are so worn out they no longer flutter away when I approach. Currently I have monarch cats from first to fourth instars and many chrysalises in three different sanctuaries. One sanctuary of cats and chrysalises is being enjoyed by residents, staff, and visitors in a nearby assisted living facility. I will begin tagging and releasing butterflies at the assisted living facility so residents can make a wish as the butterflies are released.
The number of butterflies observed represents 10 days of observations for about 30 minutes each day.
