Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/12/2013

Number: 50

A strong NNW wind today sent yesterday's monarchs many miles. I found a small roost at last week's location southeast of New Richmond, WI and NW of Baldwin, WI.....actually closer to Hammond, WI as I recently discovered.
Had almost given up. Had checked several blooming alfalfa fields around Osceola. Then checked the red clover fields near Hammond this evening. Did not see a single monarch.
Was driving off when a single monarch flew off the last field I checked. Soon there were more. They came as if on signal, just about an hour before sunset. One roost was at least 27. Another was at least nine. There were a few other small ones, but I could not verify any larger roosts at that spot.
I talked to Carl, who lives where I was looking. I asked him if he saw many butterflies yesterday. His response indicated there must have been LOTS. Today they were mostly gone, but I got to see one more very pleasant show.
