Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/12/2013

Number: 7

Unable to observe this mornings visitations I managed to take in my usual evening observations. Todays temperature was 15 degrees cooler than yesterday with it being in the upper 70's. It rained off and on during the day. An all at one time sighting total of 7 hummers was observed. However, this evening, they were more passive and tolerant of each other. Several times multiples of 3 or 4 occupied the same feeder instead of the guarding and chasing. Also noted, was their perch time at the feeders has increased from a few seconds to where a couple were spending five to seven minutes sitting and drinking. As the daylight hours shorten so does the time when the last hummer to leave departs for the night. A week ago the last one departed the feeders at 8:20pm tonight it was 8:08pm. A couple of the females have really plumped up a lot, so I will be curious if my sightings total will diminish even more. All appear to be regulars as they don't mind my presence within 3 feet of the feeder and aren't skittish. The Rose-of-Sharon blooms still continue to be their favorite bloom. There also is noted fewer insects as well toward the evening hours, so my guess is that soon the silence of their droning wing beats and perky chirps will find me longing for next seasons return arrival. As always the feeders will remain hanging and fresh for a minimum of a week after my last sighting in case a late straggler needs a quick refuel.
