Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/12/2013

Number: 1

I spotted the RTHU (believe adult female) on the back feeder the morning of September 12 and saw the bird going back and forth from the side feeders to the backyard a few times during the day. At days end I saw the bird at it's ritual perch in the back yard and fueling up on the backyard feeder.

It is now September 14 and I have not seen the bird since, I specifically watched at days end when I would always see it. We had almost 4 inches of rain since September 12th. I suspect the amazing Journey South has begun for the last of the RTHU I believe spent the summer in my immediate area. I will keep one feeder up, the most high and visible. I will struggle with exactly what day to take it down having had the late season visitor on October 5, 2012 which spent 10 days here. During that experience I did a great deal of research on RTHU and came to learn about Operation Ruby-Throat, the Hummingbird Project and Dr. Bill Hilton of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History. This is a cross-disciplinary international initiative in which people collaborate to study behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).
There is so much to learn about these amazing birds and I am very excited to have an opportunity to particpate in one of the upcoming expeditions.
