Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/16/2013

Number: 18

This summer the number of h. birds visiting our feeders has been probably less than 10% of last recent 10 years. Never seen so few birds! And, did not sight one bird here in spring (April-May)-- also atypical. Only spotted a total of 5 or 6 birds over the summer until finally, Sept. 1 (ahead of a cool front with rain) about 3 dozen showed up. Two weeks later we're back to 1-2 dozen and dwindling. In years past we have approximately 7-8 dozen birds full time, primarily Ruby Throats and an occasional Black Chinned, which arrive late April and are gone by mid-Oct. Am wondering what could be behind this low population in 2013.
