Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/16/2013

Number: 1

I have been counting monarchs at Clearville Park for the past several years. 2013 is a bust.

Clearville Park is located on the north shore of Lake Erie not far from Pt. Pelee where the butterflies roost before crossing Lake Erie to Ohio. The butterflies are funnelled along Lake Erie and through Clearville park from all across Ontario when the wind and weather conditions are just right.

The peak migration usually occurs here around Sept 15. In previous years on this date I could count several thousand butterflies per hour heading south west.

This year – only a handful and many days none at all. On good days the most I have seen after observing for 1 hour is 4 butterflies.
