Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/17/2013

Number: 4

A total of four spotted this evening. All four were females, 3 adult and 1 juvenile. Three were spotted spending a long time perched at the patio feeders while one chose to only hit upon the Rose-of-Sharon blooms. Temperatures peaked at 70 degrees today with expectations of dipping to 48 degrees tonight. Last sighted hummer at feeder was 7;54pm. Each progressing day for the past week the last hummer at a feeder departed earlier than the day before, as well as my spotting fewer hummers each progressing day during the last evening feeding session. Temperatures are expected to climb back into the high of 80's for two or three days and nighttime lows near 55 to 60. This might well be the last or very close to last sighting report I submit as the remaining observed hummers are all now quite plump for their long journey southward. Will they depart while the weather is in their favor or hold out for just a few more days. Time will tell. It's been a GREAT year for hummers and soon the patio will fall silent of their droning hum and cheery chirp. And I, I'll be planning 2014 season's flowering attractants and anxiously awaiting their return. To you folks southward, enjoy my energetic little feathered jewels. All the best to everyone!
