Keith Graves, Bob and I visited the sunflower thicket along the Santa Cruz River in the San Rafael Valley (by permit only) and spotted over 40 monarchs among thick sunflower meadows and A. subverticillata. 5th instar larvae also present. Queens outnumbered monarchs but all butterfly numbers were abundant. However, mosquitoes outnumbered the butterflies 10,000 to 1.
