Last Thursday, September 12, as we were preparing for the students of Nerstrand Schools annual fall visit to the prairie we sited many monarch butterflies on the wildflowers. The students would be excited to see them the next day. On Friday, September 13th when the students arrived on the prairie most of the butterflies had left. The 150 students, staff, and many parents were strewn across the prairie to study the wildflowers and grasses.
Only 2 monarch butterflies were seen. The previous days gentle north wind had swept them all away to the south as they took off on their migration to Mexico. We hope they all make it as we wonder where they are now. Are they in your backyard or on the prairies in your neighborhood?
