Cold!!! Probably on in the 50's at best. So this morning I warmed the nectar for my hummers before dawn. I rehung the feeder and went inside. About 10 minutes later, I checked the feeder, to my horror I saw one of the hummers hanging upside down off the perch like she was dead. I ran out to check and as I approached, she fell to the ground. She flopped around and I scooped her up to check her. She immediately quieted in my hand. I held her in both hands for a few moments and she seemed to just be collecting herself, and getting warmed up. She perked up, looked over my hand, so I opened my palm all the way and she took off like a streak. YEAH!!!!!! I couldn't believe it. The feeling of her heart beating against my palm was so special. I will never forget it. Literally they weigh nothing.
I know we are never supposed to interact with the wildlife, but sometimes the heart jumps over the head. I took this yesterday in the afternoon. I so dread the day they aren't here anymore....
