I observed a total of 5 female hummers, 4 adults and 1 juvenile. This total of 5 at the feeder is two more that the previous evening sighting. Morning temperatures hovered in the 50's with the hummers coming in very early about 40 minutes before sunrise at 6:45am. They remained very close to the feeders and drank exceptionally long. For the last week I have maintained A 2:1 ratio of water to sugar supply in the feeders knowing they would soon depart southward. I didn't know at the time that come evening the feeders would fall silent for the 2013 season for the first time since their arrival on May 2, 2013. I suspected they might leave with them staying close to the feeders for so long. I also noted our regular visitor that seemed to always come to the dining room window feeder was doing quite the window dancing act as if to say thanks and see you next season. No hummers were spotted at the feeders the rest of the day until mid afternoon at 3:45pm when I observed what appeared to be a lone southward traveler stopping for a quick refuel. He was quite skittish but drank long and then departed southwestwardly. That may have been my last sighting for this 2013 season. Now I focus on planning next seasons hummingbird garden flowering attractants. It's been a GREAT 2013 hummingbird season and I've enjoyed reading others sighting reports and will continue to do so as I follow their journey southward. And if I spot a late traveler , I'll report in. There was one other hint that they might be leaving today ..... see my attached photo. All the best to everyone!
