Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/23/2013

Number: 5

Since the beginning of September, I have had 5 to 10 sightings per day of hummingbirds. One, in particular, really stole my heart. This female hummer stayed in my backyard from September 12 to September 17, guarding the feeder, remaining at her "post" (which was to perch on top of a shepherd's hook) and leaving for only short periods of time. Luckily I have two feeders, which I quickly moved one completely out of her sight as she started to defend that as well. I spent those days watching her with delight as she hunted for bugs and used the feeder and flowers, and her giving chase to other hummingbirds. But, eventually, she left, as I knew she would. Did I feel sad? You bet, even though I knew she cannot stay. This little window I had into the world of hummingbirds is something I will remember for a long, long time.
