Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/23/2013

Number: 1

On September 20th, a cold front swept down from the north bringing north winds to Texas. This low pressure system crossed the Texas coast on the morning of September 21st. Hummingbird numbers dropped dramatically after the front. I've only seen one hummer yesterday (9/22) and today (9/23), whereas before the front, we were seeing about 20 hummers constantly at our feeders all day long.

I assume the hummers took advantage of the north winds associated with the front and moved south for the winter. Once the winds turn around back from the southeast, maybe another wave of hummers will sit on the Texas coast awhile until the next cold front allows them to continue their journey. I'm keeping our feeders full and ready for winged guests.
