Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/24/2013

Number: 1

So delightful to observe one adult Monarch butterfly on and off the sun covered part of the butterfly bushes in my front yard this afternoon, 19 C again after a couple of very cool and rainy days in Toronto. Actually for about 15-20min of this period there was quite a lot of competition between the monarch butterfly and a hummingbird whisking frantically from bloom to bloom on the same butterfly bushes. Fortunately, it seemed as if the hummingbird realized that the Monarch would stay on the sunny side of the bushes and that it could help itself freely to nectar on blooms on the shady part of the bushes. At the same time the butterfly bushes were also visited by quite a few sparrows feeding on the seeds from earlier blooms on the bushes. All that activity of course led the Monarch to frequently move from one bloom to the next. Lovely to watch!
