Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/22/2013

Number: 133

After thunderstorms during the night, Sunday was a sunny day with temps in the mid 60's and a strong west wind. I spotted 133 monarchs through out the day. As previously they were accompanied by almost a thousand dragon and damsalflies. The monarchs were flying from east to west, however the strong west wind was a challenge for the monarchs. They started roosting about 4 pm with sunset @ 7 pm. Similar to my last posting, the roosts remain small with the majority between one and five monarchs. They looked very healthy and there was an abundance of food. The numbers sadly remain well below previous years. I was also out observing on September 11,12 and 13 for 1 1/2 hours each day at 6pm and did not spot any monarchs. This is a very disappointing season. While looking for monarchs, I received alot of comments from people who recognized me from years past and were also disappointed in the lack of monarchs this season.
