Last week, our Gr. 5 class saw a monarch fly from a field behind our school, across the schoolyard, and out of sight. This was only the third time any students at our school have seen a monarch since school started the first week of September. Today we went on a walk to a quarry being constructed a short 1.5km from our school which feels very out of place considering much of our area is conservation land. Along the side of the road in front of the quarry site we found a dead adult monarch. We ended the day yesterday with another sighting of an adult outside our classroom window. Two students caught it with a butterfly net and I was able to tag it with a tag from the University of Kansas. This was very exciting for us as we didn't expect to be able to catch any this year considering the declining population.
