Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/22/2013

Number: 30

We visited Tangier Island, a small island that sits in the Chesapeake Bay here in Virginia.

We saw around 30 Monarchs during our 3-4 hour stay on the island - they nectared on goldenrod which was looking robust and rich.

We walked to places on the island where in the past we've seen communal roosts but didn't find them. Only a few Monarchs flying through the streets. This is a huge contrast to past years where we would see hundreds flying around.

Dragonflies and Buckeyes were migrating through and Merlins hunted over the grasses as well.

The Monarchs we saw were huge and bright and healthy and they flew with a certain determination that you too have seen -- a determination that I think most all of us on this list share with them.
