Liatris sp. come up in spring but don't bloom until Sept-October with the peak coinciding with Monarch migration in mid October. They grow tall to reach above the native prairie grasses. Blooming has started and is right on time for migration.
The butterfly in the image is of course NOT a Monarch, but the color can fool you at a distance.
