Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/27/2013

Number: 50

The conditions over the last week have been a mirror of one year ago with very similar hummer populations at the feeders - crowded at sunrise and sunset and busy throughout the day. Last year I watched in amazement as an apparent young female Ruby tried desperately to feed off closed flowers. In the image, you can see her tongue reaching out in a hunt for nectar. She gave up after about a minute. Yesterday I watched a female Ruby twist and jerk in mid air as she snatched small airborne bugs to satisfy her thirst for protein. What a sight these little beauties are.
