At our first meeting of the Toronto Entomologists' Association today (9/28), a number of members noted seeing more monarchs than they have seen all year. All week has been sunny, with temperatures above 70 F. These monarchs have traveled from points north and east, and when they reach Lake Ontario, they continue westward, with some flying directly across the lake when there are favourable conditions. Numbers still low, but the peak seems later this year. Perhaps because we had a cool, damp and late spring?

Some reports:

Steve Laforest: I counted 31 Monarchs at Pumphouse Marsh in Oshawa (east of Toronto) on Thurs. Sept. 26, 2013. This was by far my best count of the year, including all of our butterfly counts. They all looked very fresh.

Bob Yukich reports counting 79 monarchs on Thurs. Sept. 26 on the "ornamentals" in High Park, a 400 acre urban park west of the downtown core of the city, stretching north from Lake Ontario to Bloor Street. Also over 60 the following day.
