FINALLY saw a monarch again at National Zoo!!! It was a female, and she was in the Butterfly Garden behind the Invertebrate House, nectaring at the scarlet milkweed. I followed her for ten minutes as she went back-and-forth between two different plantings of these vivid orange-and-red blooms. Happily, I was able to take several dozen photos, one of the prettiest of which I've included here. (She also spent a few moments basking on a red maple behind the garden...) I don't know when I've ever been so excited to see a monarch butterfly:-)
