Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/29/2013

Number: 42

This is a mowed utility trail that runs parallel with the main road. We followed this trail for about an hour. We counted 42 adult monarchs visiting a field of mostly Maximilian Sunflowers. This field contains some liatris, and goldenrod, but the golden rod was mostly spent, and the liatris was sparse. The butterflies we counted looked robust, and healthy. We were only able to identify one male and wondered about that, though we were not able to check the gender of each butterfly we counted. In total this is about half of the number of butterflies we normally see in this area. But given the years of drought before in this region, the poor things were hit pretty hard in previous years. The time we spent on that trail was 1.5 hrs and the time we visited was 1:30 pm til about 3pm .
