Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/30/2013

Number: 1

Very exciting, in my 30+ years of watching them, this morning is the first time I looked up and simply spotted a hummingbird migrating from north to south in the sky above me. Weather is very sunny and warm here along the Potomac River in northern VA, so hummer was easy to see - its wings were illuminated so clearly from above. It was flying southward over the treetops, but making spiral 'dances' in a circle as it caught & ate various small insects in its path. I know they eat while flying, but hadn't ever see this wonderful "spiral" feeding pattern during migration. I encourage all to look up in the sky for a few moments today! They are really on the move.
