The very front of the migration line has hit Dallas! I have a relatively large urban butterfly garden, and yesterday there were 6 +/- Monarchs in the yard chasing eachother around, nectaring, and laying eggs. While 6 Monarchs at once is not that remarkable, when you see essentially none in the month of August, and very few in September, 6 at once means the migration has started. This exact pattern happens every year at this time so it's to be expected. From here, the migration will grow and grow wiith each passing day, until it peaks here around October 10-15. Last year, observed about 60 +/- at once in the yard during peak migration (an awesome sight with neighbors stopping to watch), but with the population decline, not sure what to expect this year. They clearly LOVE to nectar on Frostweed, which is just coming into bloom right now, as well as Gregg's Mist Flower. For all that read this and raise Monarchs and provide gardens for them - they told me to tell you thanks. Every little bit helps!
